MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – The 2024 Presidential race is heating up.

Since the last Marquette Law School poll in June, there has been a debate, an assassination attempt, the Republican National Convention, and that was before one of the candidates was replaced entirely.

The newest Marquette Law School poll was taken between July 24 and Aug.1. It was a bonus poll due to tumultuous political changes, and in true Wisconsin fashion, it's showing a very close Presidential race.

"I tell people, if you want to know who's going to win, give me a quarter and I'll flip it for you. I think that's actually a pretty good decision rule right now," said Marquette Law School poll director, Charles Franklin.

The newest poll shows former President Donald Trump at 50% and Vice President Kamala Harris at 49% among registered Wisconsin voters in the race for President.

"Unless something changes a lot between now and election day, all of our evidence all year long, including with Harris as the candidate, shows this is a race on a knifes edge," Franklin explained.

The U.S. Senate race is not as close in Wisconsin, with democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin at 53%, and republican Eric Hovde at 46% among registered voters.

Franklin expects more attention on this race after the Democratic National Convention.

"Both candidates are well-resourced to run this campaign, so we'll see a lot of advertising from both sides," he said.

With Vice President Harris now in the race, enthusiasm is clearly growing among Wisconsin Democrats.

62 percent of them now say they're "very" enthusiastic to vote in the November election: up 22 points from 40% in June.

Meanwhile, 64% of republicans are "very" enthusiastic to vote, up from 57% in June.

"I think Democrats were very relieved not to have Biden as their candidate, and they quickly embraced Harris," Franklin said. "Replacing him with Harris restores the very competitive race, but it has not put her ahead by any substantial measure either."

There are 90 days until the presidential election.

Franklin said the next set of poll data will be informative, as voters learn more about the Vice-Presidential candidates, Senator JD Vance and Governor Tim Walz.
